This has stuck to me in my mind in the past days, and I found myself agreeing with it more and more. Unfortunately, I read it months ago, and can’t give proper credit to the person who posted it; it was on a French forum about losing weight and getting out of obesity, is all I can remember.

Basically, this person stated that: “We fat people get angry or at least roll our eyes at these thin women who complain that they’ve taken a pound and now need to be careful about food for a few days. But, if we think of it more, maybe if WE had also freaked out at takng ‘only’ one pound each time it had happened, and done what needed to be done to get rid of it, we wouldn’t be obese today.”

That’s food for thought, alright (aye, aye, pun intended). In any case, I find this person was right. Maybe things would’ve been easier on me, hadn’t I gone al “oh I’m 62 kgs, alright… oh I reached 64, I’m still far from 70, cool… oh 67, well, it’s under 70, right?”… Until one day I found myself at 75, and remembered with shame how I had sworn to myself, 7 years ago, to never, ever get back near the 70s again.

I should’ve weighed myself way more often, and freaked out at a pound gained. Yes, this would have been a good thing for me, I think.

I remember reading something like that too, although I don’t think it was in a French forum. But yeah, the gist of it was, don’t hate on your skinny friends when they freak over a couple pounds - that first pound can be the start of 100 pounds, and don’t you wish you had nipped it in the bud at a couple pounds instead of waiting. Good sense. I guess the times it annoys me is when the friend is super super skinny and really could stand to gain a few pounds, but then that’s a bad path to go down too. Maybe the lesson for me is to not pay attention to or be judgmental of anyone else’s weight, thin or fat!

Ah, yes, when the person could really do with a few more pounds, that’s another thing, I suppose.

Nipping it in the bud is a really good way of putting it. I anyway think that, in order to maintain our weight loss, we need to learn how to do that–else it’ll be “back to yo-yo dieting” all the time…

I need to lose weight, there I said it. I'd love to start a weekly motivation group with the goal of documenting our weight loss.

I was thinking we could do one layout a week with different weight loss topics.

    The first topic is:

Title Page with a current picture and your current weight and goal weight (you may want to blur these before posting online.) I plan on printing this one and putting it on my bathroom mirror, although the fridge would be a better place!

Who else is on board with me???

A couple more things, we need to figure out a night for a weekly motivation chat AND I'd love to have a nifty little name for us like:
    PAW- Pound a Week
CHEESE- Choose Health Exercise Eating Sensible Everyday

I'm sure you can come up with something better!

I have been getting fit as a group with a few friends doing the workouts in the October issue of FITNESS. They have a You Can Do it Program that is really easy to use and the magazine gives you workouts, confidence tips, strength training moves and it has a great cover this month–not a skinny girl in a bikini! YAHOOOOOOOOOO If anyone wants to do the program with me, pick up the October issue of FItness and check it out and email

It is never a straight line from the weight you are to the weight you choose to be. Fluctuations happen. A way to help keep things in perspective is to draw a line graph showing where you started and how you have progressed. If you then look at the trend of this line, although it may bobble around at times, as long as you accept this, the trend to losing even more pounds will continue.
