First, sorry for the problems you may have encountered on this blog yesterday. I think my Counterize plugin did make too many requests on one of my blogs (that, or spam bots decided to attack en masse) so I disabled it just to make sure, but the blog had been ugly for some time before that, and I don’t know for how long.

Now onto today’s post (which should have been yesterday’s, but meh). On a whim, at the supermarket, I decided to try something I had never had a taste of before: soy steak. All the people I know tend to consider that soy and related products such as tofu are Teh Crap, but me being who I am, i.e. an experimenter who’s not afraid to put weird stuff in her mouth provided it looks and feels healthy, I bought it all the same.

So a steak is about 100g, 17g protein, 4.4g carbs, 7.1g fiber and 6g fat (4.2g of which is monoinsaturated fat). Ah, and 0.6g sodium. I don’t know if the sodium part is a good thing–since I don’t add salt to my food once out of twice, I don’t worry too much about sodium. Anyway. It looked good, the protein/fat ratio looked quite decent, there was Provence herbs in it, and I thought that if I ate vegetables with it, it would cover my carb ratio for lunch and there’d be no need to add a little rice or something.

I ate that steak along with 100-120g of green beans, lettuce (the steak came with a little sauce pack of 16 calories, I thought it wouldn’t harm if used on the salad instead), then I took some more lettuce, without sauce, this time, and 30g of camembert cheese.

And, oh geez, all that stuff was filling!

You know, I regularly have problems with that full/satisfied/still hungry thing. My rational mind knows when enough is enough, but I’m not always certain, and often have to wait for half a hour after a meal to make sure if I’ve been satisfied or definitely need to add a yogurt or a slice of cheese to complete it (or revise the way I plan my meals to add more vegetables or protein). Therefore, when something doesn’t take much room in my already small plate and leaves me feeling really satisfied for the next four hours at least, I’m quite surprised.

These steaks are a little expensive (3 euros for two of them), which is too bad. However, I think that maybe once a week, they’re worth having. After all, if it’s to be left so satisfied, that’s a piece of fruit I won’t eat at snack time, or a cookie I won’t be tempted by. Maybe that kind of reward is worth the financial sacrifice?

Ah, and I forgot to add: yes, it tasted good. I really liked it. No need to force myself to eat something because it’s healthy but I hate its taste. /wink

Soy steaks sound like something I’d like too - I wonder if they have something similar here in the states - I’m always interested in new heatlhy “filling” food items.

I use plain air popped popcorn for those time hunger is a problem. I keep it to measured amounts. I know what you mean about being full and having enough - it’s a learning process, I’m getting better at it.

Thanks for commenting, Lady Rose. :)

I’m not sure about where to find soy steaks in the USA, but certainly that some brands do sell some (the ones I’ve eaten were from Sojasun, but it seems it’s available in France only).
