So I did it. Yesterday, for lunch, I ate in some fast-food joint, near my workplace. It wasn’t intended. I wasn’t supposed to still be stuck 100 km from my home in the afternoon. I was supposed to take the train back, and be able to cook something nice and healthy at home. But due to circumstances, I couldn’t, I hadn’t any “emergency food” with me, and I didn’t have the time to take the bus back and forth to the closest mall in order to try and pick something better… so I ate at that place.

Alright. I’m not a saint, I’m not eating perfectly well every single day, I do have my moments of weaknesses when I still give in (much to my dismay) to cravings. However, generally speaking, it’s a fact that my lifestyle has improved tremendously compared to what it used to be when I wasn’t taking care of my health at all… and one very good thing is that the consequences of this don’t “only” appear in the weight loss itself. All in all, this is pretty much encouraging on many accounts!

So, eating too much definitely isn’t any good for someone who isn’t a professional athlete in training, just like eating the wrong things will make us gain on weight too. Then there’s the “not eating” enough part, against which we’re regularly warned by many books and articles… and now I think I’ve just fell into that this week.

Has it ever occurred to anyone that some things that can be seen as annoying by other people, or at least label us as a little weird, can actually be assets regarding the need to lose weight? The realization that popped into my mind was about food, but I believe it could actually be about […]

This is a sore spot, clothing. What’s worse is that it’s just as sore a spot whether we are slightly overweight, with many kilograms to shed, or just non-conform to the generally accepted canon (which, oddly enough, constitutes a minority of the population in our Western countries). So, clothing? A Chinese puzzle at times, when it comes to figuring out what to wear, and above all - where to buy it!

Even though weight loss as well as maintenance tend to be very hard battles, at least at times… even though being heavy can so easily turn into a bane of constant health problems here and there… can we say that, in a way, we overweight people may be luckier than the always-thin people regarding health matters - provided, of course, that we don’t close our eyes on the signals?

Ever believed that you could lose the weight and stay thin for life? Yes? Good, because not only is believing this a strong key to actually achieve it, but others have done that before us, and proven that it is very possible. Thin For Life refutes the popular notion that losing weight permanently is hopeless; in this book, one will find tips, methods and thoughts from “masters” who’ve kept their weight off for years.

Here’s another of these nice pieces of advice you can find on many websites and in many books related to weight loss, yet that only take their full meaning once you’ve experienced them and finally understands what they really mean: “keep your hands busy”.

It dawned on me, all of a sudden, that my life as an overweight person - whatever my degree of overweight - has been, and still is, marked by constant comparisons. Comparisons from others, comparisons from me, comparisons that never existed, that I was only imagining. In a way, I find this behavior ugly. In another way, realizing it may actually help me to reach a new step in my journey.

Back in high school, even though I was pretty much overweight, I wasn’t that bad at running. I wasn’t fast, I wasn’t the best one, but I remember that, thanks to our marks being based on regularity as well as distance, I used to get well-graded, for I did manage to run all the way long while remaining very regular in every lap. Thus, recently, I thought to myself: now that the weather is really nice again, shouldn’t I try to run again?
