One little thing I’ve learnt, both from myself and from ‘partners in crime’, is that when it comes to weight loss as well as exercising, setting clear and defined goals is a very important thing. Short-term, middle-term, long-term goals - all of these three types are essential to the pursuit of weight loss, and probably to its maintenance too.

Today, for lunch, I did something I shouldn’t have. I was in town to buy a few groceries to prepare tomorrow’s lunch, the one we’ll eat in the car on the road to the other end of the country for our Easter holidays, and all my resolves and right tinking went down the drain when I saw one of the unhealthy foods I used to eat before. Yes, that’s it, I couldn’t resist, and ate this instead of a healthy lunch of vegetables and lean meat, in spite of knowing that I was acting wrong. Oh noes! Is my diet completely screwed up now?

At times, even the words of those who are close to you cannot reach you with the needed efficiency. At times, even the most logical information cannot reach this part of yourself that would make you go “yes, this is right, this is what I have to do”. And then, all of a sudden, a complete stranger manages to touch you in a way that you wouldn’t have suspected, making all the rest suddenly take on a new meaning. Isn’t this a very weird feeling?

One of my recent ponderings regarding the whole weight loss issue was about what I consider one of the critical steps in it - the actual point of starting up. Motivation, willpower and commitment are always nice words on the paper (or on the blog page); however, as we probably all know it, there’s a whole world between words and action.

Although I am now, for the moment, mostly freed from such constraints, due to my current job being workable from home, there was a time, not so long ago, where my food habits were a real catastrophe, illustrating pretty much what’s unfortunately become a norm for too many people: when we don’t have the time, we eat the first convenient thing we can lay our hands on.

I am usually a very quiet person, both in my behavior and in my occupations. I can keep sitting on a chair, typing on the keyboard, drawing or reading a book, for hours and hours. While I’m not a big fan of TV, thus not spending much time on the couch, I’m a big fan of my computer, and let’s admit that spending this time reading articles on the web, while pretty much interesting and instructive, isn’t making my body move. I am sort of a “busy” person - not an “active” one.

A few days ago, I was doing some shopping in a supermarket where I usually don’t go to; this time however, I needed a few items that can’t be found at my regular place of shopping, so I didn’t really have the choice. ‘Lo and behold, no sooner had I walked through the automatic doors that what did greet me? A large aisle full of Easter treats and chocolate bunnies! At this sight, my stomach made a gurgling flip, and painfully reminded me that it was already noon and that I should buy this. Right now. Then eat it on the spot.

It wasn’t the first time that I was reading about how it is now said that ideally, one should walk 10,000 steps every day for cardiovascular health - more that that, actually, for weight loss. Of course, in my great wisdom, I chuckled a bit at all of this, thinking that evidently, I was walking more than 10,000 steps a day, and that probably most people were doing it as well. Right, genius. I was up for quite a surprise.

Yesterday, I had a nasty reminder that I should remain wary of circumstances - always. No matter when I reach my weight goal, no matter how much time I need to do so, no matter when I live the days when I become a maintainer rather than a dieter - I will always have to remain vigilant. Yes, that’s exactly it: never let your guard down, girl.

Being overweight is unfortunately a situation that isn’t as easy to solve as it can seem from an external point of view. “You just have to eat better” or “you just have to undergo a diet” sound very appealing and very evident, yet I keep on thinking (and many others do think the same, from what I could read in various books, blogs and websites) that to really start on seriously losing weight, something in you needs to “click”.
